Astronomical Characteristics

Jupiter is more than 11 times wider than Earth and has a mass 2.5 times greater than all other planets combined. Its rapid rotation, completing a full spin in just about 9 hours and 55 minutes, causes it to bulge at the equator. Jupiter spends approximately 1 year in each sign and retrogrades each year for about four to five months. So we can see from his external motion that he moves at a slow and steady pace with regular periods of internal reflection (retrogrades). However, his short daily rotation (approximately 9 hours) promised that he can be an agent of rapid internal change in our lives.

Element: Ether

Jupiter is associated with the element of Ether, the most subtle of all the elements. Ether represents the dimension of space and the concept of dimensionality. This indicates that his knowledge has no bounds, it is eternal in scope and content. This also shows that his lessons can be subtle.


Gender: Masculine (extroverted/assertive)

Jupiter is considered male (extroverted/assertive). Masculine planets are characterized by their active and external nature. Assertive planets are associated with qualities such as ambition, action, and energy. Jupiter expresses these traits as an ambition to deepen our metaphysical knowledge. When he is well positioned in the chart, he will direct his energy into developing a larger world view which supports dharmic actions. His primary goal is to free us from the delusions of the temporary events that shape our daily lives and direct us toward nurturing a consciousness grounded in the eternal truths.

Jupiter is motivated to manifest Sattva, which represents purity, harmony, and balance. Jupiter energizes that part of us which seeks purity, wisdom, and harmony with others. Jupiter promotes ethical behavior, truthfulness, and a keen understanding of both manifest and unmanifest dynamics in a situation.

Jupiter is known for his wisdom, generosity, and optimism. People influenced by Jupiter are often philosophical, ethical, and have a strong sense of justice. They can be leaders but are often more comfortable as advisors and mentors to those who are in positions of leadership. In the celestial court, Jupiter is the philosophical advisor to the King. His advice is grounded in the eternal principles of Karma (cause and effect) and Dharma (right action). In Vedic Astrology, Jupiter represents the Father.
