Astronomical Characteristics: Retrogrades

Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun. They move through one sign of the zodiac over 15 to 60 days. This indicates that they can be the fastest planet in the heavens. 15 to 60 days is a pretty big variation for a planet to cover a sign. This is because Mercury turns retrograde 3 times a year and that can create the prolonged stay in one sign. On Average, they  spend 14 to 30 days in a sign. This variability in the sign reflects the flexible and adaptable nature of Mercury. His frequent retrogrades can also indicate that Mercury can change their mind on issues related to the areas of the chart that they influence by placement, rulership and aspect.

Element: Earth

Mercury is associated with the element of Earth. Earth planets are characterized by their practical and grounded nature. They are associated with qualities such as stability, reliability, and the ability to think clearly and profoundly. Individuals influenced by earth planets are practical thinkers with a good sense of humor. They are organized, fact-based, and able to influence others through speaking and writing.

Gender: Pre-adolescent; Non-Binary

Mercury is considered neutral, neither male nor female. In our current understanding of gender, we may say that Mercury is not on the binary scale. They may also be seen as pre-adolescent. They can encompass the traditional traits of both the male and the female and at the same time they may identify with neither. This further supports Mercury’s unique and individual manifestation in each person. As the native ages, they may not conform to a strict binary presentation in life. This is more likely if Mercury is placed in or aspects the first house or a Kama house (3rd, 7th or 11th) or seated in a sign or house related to romance (5th), partnerships (7th), or sexual expression (8th).

Guna: Rajas

Mercury is motivated to by the energy of Rajas. Rajas are characterized by activity, ambition, and dynamic action. They express movement, energy, and the ability to achieve worldly desires. The houses and signs influenced by rajasic planets are powerful, commanding, and able to externalize their materialistic talents successfully. This indicates that Mercury will lean into “doing” rather than expressing “being”. The planets driven by Sattva (Sun, Moon and Jupiter) strive to achieve light and purity; while the planets motivated by Tamas (Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) see the world as a competition (fear, anger, greed, etc.), Mercury will focus on working actively on a troubling situation until they find a logical solution. They encompass sattvic and tamasic nature in equal parts.

Personality Traits:

Mercury is known for its intelligence, communication skills, and adaptability. People influenced by Mercury are often witty, curious, and analytical. They have a knack for learning and are good at problem-solving.

In the celestial court, Mercury is the Heir Apparent (Prince or Princess). This reflects the stability of the earth element when we consider that no King’s rulership is stable until he has produced an heir to ensure the lineage. Mercury’s association with adolescence also indicates the coming generation and the continual forward flow of history. Mercury expresses the inevitable emergence of new ideas. They are always forward looking but they may not understand the precursors of a situation. Their strength (being forward directed) can also be their weakness. If Mercury strives to study the history (Saturn) of a situation they can be a powerful and effective force for positive change.

Common Careers:

The Jyotish indications for the planet Mercury's careers are associated with intellect, communication skills, and adaptability. People influenced by Mercury often excel in careers related to communication, such as writers, journalists, and teachers. They may also thrive in fields that require analytical skills, such as scientists, mathematicians, and accountants.

Mercury's influence brings a sense of curiosity and adaptability, making individuals under its sway witty and analytical. These traits are beneficial in careers that require strong communication and problem-solving skills. Whether in writing, teaching, or scientific research, Mercury's presence is felt through the clarity and precision they bring to one's thoughts and actions.

Putting it all together

When Mercury is strong in the chart, the native will be curious, funny, intelligent and a keen observer of life. They will have a variety of interests and may have special abilities with language and all styles of writing. They can embrace complex areas of study and pursue an area of interest for years. This will give them a deep and subtle understanding of their chosen areas of study.

When Mercury is afflicted, the native may always appear immature and lack curiosity or the ability to stick with an area of interest. They may abandon projects at the first sign of a challenge. They may resist change or growth and adopt the persona of someone who already knows everything. This can lead to tribalism and misplaced loyalty. These characteristics indicate an imbalance in their rajasic and earthy nature. We can advise them to venture out of their comfort zone.
