Introduction to Rahu and Ketu:
The last two Vedic planets are unique. Rather than a physical planets, these energies are generated at the confluence of the Solar and Lunar orbital pathways. Rahu and Ketu are located 180 degrees apart where these two orbital planes intersect. The nodes, Rahu and Ketu, project powerful energies which impact our lives. The nodes are only visible when the Sun and Moon are in direct opposition or conjunction. We experience these alignments as the Solar and Lunar eclipses. Make no mistake, while we may not be able to see the nodes, they can see us, and they shape the course of our lives. We will begin with Rahu.
Astronomical Characteristics:
As the Sun and Moon have the strongest gravitational pull on our planet, it makes sense that the two points where their orbital paths intersect would create a disturbance or ripple in their energy as they transit a particular Sign. Rahu and Ketu disturb the energy of the signs where they are seated and harass the planets that they conjunct or aspect. While the Sun and Moon never retrograde, Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde. Rahu and Ketu move slowly through the zodiac spending 18.5 months in each sign. They move 3 degrees each day. They take approximately 18 years to move through all 12 signs. This slow speed indicates that their energy can bring significant changes to the areas of life where their impact is felt.
Element: Ether
Rahu is associated with the element of Ether which is the most subtle of the elements. Ether is also known as Akash or the concept of dimension in space. Either has the qualities of subtlety, intuition, creativity and expansion. For Rahu, the subtlety indicates his ability alter our perceptions of a situation. His turbulence can lead us to misread a situation on the intuitive level. Rahu is capable of creating a false narrative that we embrace under his delusion. These ideas and perceptions can spread to many areas of our life and are likely to manifest during his dasha periods and will cause confusion in the signs and houses that he occupies and aspects. Like the Universe itself, Ether is always expanding and Rahu will take us into new areas of life and new ways of being which can be both seductive and frightening.

Gender: Masculine (Active/ assertive)
Rahu is considered male. Masculine planets are characterized by their active and external nature. They are associated with qualities such as ambition, action, and energy. Rahu can endow individuals with a desire to seek power, control, and engage in new ways of being in areas related to the houses and signs that he occupies and rules. In these areas, the individual will face new karmic challenges and can feel overwhelmed by the intensity of Rahu’s energy.
Guna: Tamas
Rahu is motivated by the Tamas guna, which represents his desire to accomplish concrete goals and accumulate success in the material world. This focus on the material world can awaken jealousy, anger, indulgence, lust and greed. Rahu can cast a shadow on our psyche and drive us toward false goals that do not align with the eternal goals of life.
Symbolism:
Rahu is personified as the head of the great karmic serpent. This point in the orbit is like a whirlpool of energy where the energies of the Sun and Moon mix. From this powerful disturbance arises the Head of a serpent with a gaping mouth. Rahu has no body and therefore cannot digest the fruits of his experiences. He is always hungry and driven to achieve more. Rahu forces us to seek out new Karmic challenges that will require the wisdom of the Sun and the compassion of the Moon to master. Through this turmoil we must find our path to reconnect the Sun and Moon and create a new balance in the areas of our life where Rahu has impact.
