Introducing the Vedic Signs

Before we dive into studying each sign, I wanted to take a minute to look at the characteristics that define the combined energies of the stars that enliven each of the 12 signs. Each sign is assigned a gender (Male/Female) and is related to one of the 4 elements (Fire, Earth, Air and Water) which correlate to the 4 Aims of Life (Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha). Also, each element expresses one stage of the combined energetic expression starting with Cardinal (initiating) energy,  Fixed (stabilizing) energy and a Dual (transitioning) energy. Knowing this substructure of the signs will allow the astrologer to deepen their interpretation of the signs.

 

Gender of the Signs:

The dual modality brings a sense of adaptability and resourcefulness, making these signs versatile and open-minded.

The modality of the signs helps astrologers understand how the energies of the signs manifest will this area of life be in a constant growth mode, will it be a fixed area for the native, or will this influence wane and be an area of transition. For example, a person with a predominance of cardinal signs may be proactive and driven, while someone with a predominance of fixed signs may be reliable and consistent. Similarly, a person with a predominance of dual signs will be adaptable and open to change.

• All Odd signs are Masculine and represent the elements of Fire/Dharma (Right Action) and Air/Kama (Desire).

• All Even signs are Feminine and represents the elements of Earth/Artha (Material Needs) and Water/Moksha (Liberation).

• Each Element has one planet that is Cardinal (Initiating), one that is Fixed (Sustaining) and one that is Mutable or Dual (Transitioning).
