Astronomical Characteristics:

Ketu does not have a physical manifestation but rather represents the point in space where the orbital path of the Sun crosses the orbital path of the Moon. The Sun and the Moon have the strongest gravitational pull on our planet, so, it makes sense that the two points where their orbital paths intersect would create a disturbance or ripple in their energy as he transits a particular Sign.

Just as planetary bodies impact the energy of the signs they traverse, so do the nodes of the Sun and Moon Rahu and Ketu. These two points are always 180 degrees apart and they always travel in a retrograde motion. As the Sun and Moon never retrograde, their nodes, Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde. These points move slowly through the zodiac spending 18.5 years in each sign. And they take approximately 18 years to move through all 12 signs. This slow speed indicates that their energy can bring significant changes to the areas of life where their impact is felt.

Element: Fire

Ketu is associated with the element of Fire. While the Sun is the eternal fire of the Soul and Mars is the Earthly fire of transformation, Ketu’s fire is the mystical blue flame of liberation. Ketu is the co-ruler of Scorpio, the fixed moksha (liberation) sign. Mars is the other ruler of Scorpio and they both share the fire element. Fire is an element of transformation and Ketu represents the internal fire that can allow us to release the past and move forward toward moksha. Ketu’s principle role is to burn away the old karmic bonds and patterns which continue to bind us to the material plane.

Ketu has the lower body of a coiled snake, the torso of a human man and instead of a head he emits a rainbow of color

Gender: Masculine (inert)

Ketu is a unique presentation of the male energy in that he is the inert, intransigent and unyielding aspect of masculinity. He is unconcerned by the pressure and ideals of society. He is relentlessly independent. Ketu asserts through stillness. He is perpetually active in his inactivity. Ketu lives outside society. He seeks to escape the material world so that he may progress in the metaphysical realm.

Guna: Tamas

Ketu is characterized by the Tamas guna, which represents inertia, darkness, and resistance. Ketu exhibits a commanding personality, the ability to shoulder responsibility for his thoughts and deeds, and is unafraid of facing karmic debts. The darkness he seeks is not that of ignorance but the deep blue black darkness of eternity.

Personality Traits:

Ketu is known for his spirituality, detachment, and introspection. People influenced by Ketu are often mystical, intuitive, and have a strong sense of inner awareness. They are inclined towards solitude and may have a tendency to withdraw from worldly affairs.

Common Careers:

Those influenced by Ketu often excel in careers related to spirituality, healing, and research. They may also thrive in fields that require deep introspection and intuition, such as astrology, meditation, and occult sciences. Ketu people will also find success in social services and working with people who are disenfranchised by society including immigrants, minority populations and people who struggle with substance use and stable housing issues.

  • Difficulty with Solitude and Withdrawal: They may find it challenging to embrace solitude and might have a tendency to constantly seek out social interactions and worldly affairs. This can hinder their focus on inner journey and spiritual growth.
